Nestled in the village of Didi Gorijvari, just 4 kilometers from Gori, Gorijvari Church is more than just a religious site; it's a symbol of resilience and devotion. Perched atop Gorijvari mountain, the church, also known as St. George's Church, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the serene Mtkvari River (Kura River) and the majestic Trialeti Mountains.The church's history is a tale of destruction and rebirth. Originally built in the 12th century and dedicated to St. George, it was destroyed by invading Turks, lovingly rebuilt, and then shattered again by a devastating earthquake in 1920. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Gorijvari Church was reconstructed in the 1980s on the foundations of a medieval hall church. The current structure, built of brick, features arched doors and windows, and a bell tower. A damaged 7th-century fence surrounds the church, a silent sentinel guarding the historic site.According to local tradition, the relics of St. George are buried within the church, believed to possess healing powers, especially for childless couples. The church is a popular pilgrimage site, particularly during the Gori-Djvroba festival, celebrated twice a year on May 6 and November 23. During these festivals, pilgrims from all over eastern Georgia gather for a solemn liturgy, animal sacrifices, and a festive meal shared with priests and the community. A copy of a valuable 13th-century cross, decorated with scenes from the life and martyrdom of St. George, as well as images of the crucifixion, is housed within the church. The original cross is now in the Tbilisi Art Museum.In the village of Didi Gorijvari, visitors can also find sulphur and thermal springs, used medicinally for joint disorders, with a small spa house nearby.
