Avranlo Megalithic Fortress: A Journey Through Time

The Avranlo Megalithic Fortress, located in the village of Avranlo in Tsalka Municipality, is a captivating historical site that offers a glimpse into Georgia's ancient past. Dating back to the 1st millennium BC, this megalithic structure stands as a testament to the ingenuity and strategic importance of early settlements in the region. Strategically positioned, the fortress controlled the narrow passage connecting Trialeti with the Borjomi Gorge. The fortification system is built on three terraces that descend towards the Ktsia River, showcasing a unique cyclopean construction using a dry masonry technique. The lowest tier features a semicircular wall, while the upper tiers reveal remnants of residential buildings and a citadel with walls reaching up to 4 meters thick. Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts from the Kura-Araxes culture, indicating continuous habitation from the Mtkvari-Araxes period to the end of the 2nd millennium BC. Within the fortress complex lies a medieval Christian church and the intriguing Abibo's Monastery, a series of caves that add to the site's mystique. Although the fortress is significantly damaged, its imposing structure and the surrounding landscape offer a memorable experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
