Public Transport

To reach Avranlo Megalithic Fortress via public transportation, take a marshrutka (minibus) from Akhaltsikhe to Aspindza. Departures are frequent, and the fare is around 2 GEL. From Aspindza, hire a taxi to reach the fortress for approximately 10-15 GEL. Negotiate the fare before starting your trip.

If traveling by car, start from Akhaltsikhe and take the E60 highway south. After approximately 30 kilometers, you will reach Aspindza. Continue on the E60 for another 10 kilometers until you see the signs for Avranlo. Exit the highway and follow the local roads until you reach Avranlo village. The fortification system is built on three terraces that descend towards the Ktsia River, showcasing a unique cyclopean construction using a dry masonry technique. The lowest tier features a semicircular wall, while the upper tiers reveal remnants of residential buildings and a citadel with walls reaching up to 4 meters thick.Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts from the Kura-Araxes culture, indicating continuous habitation from the Mtkvari-Araxes period to the end of the 2nd millennium BC. Within the fortress complex lies a medieval Christian church and the intriguing Abibo's Monastery, a series of caves that add to the site's mystique. Although the fortress is significantly damaged, its imposing structure and the surrounding landscape offer a memorable experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
