    Nestled along the Georgian Military Highway, about 72 kilometers from Tbilisi, the Ananuri Fortress Complex is a captivating historical site. This well-preserved fortress, dating back to the 13th century, was once the stronghold of the powerful Aragvi dynasty, who ruled the surrounding lands. The fortress played a crucial role in controlling the routes connecting the northern and southern Caucasus. Within the fortress walls, visitors can explore two churches, a bell tower, and the remains of defensive towers. The Church of the Assumption, built in 1689, showcases intricate carvings and frescoes, reflecting traditional Georgian craftsmanship. The older Church of the Virgin, dating back to the 17th century, houses the graves of some of the Aragvi dukes. Climbing the towers offers panoramic views of the Zhinvali Reservoir and the surrounding Caucasus Mountains. The fortress has witnessed numerous battles and power struggles throughout its history. In 1739, it was attacked and set ablaze, leading to the massacre of the Aragvi clan. Despite its turbulent past, Ananuri Fortress stands as a symbol of Georgian resilience and architectural prowess.
