Discover more about Modinakhe Castle

Modinakhe Castle, also known as Modimnakhe Fortress, is situated on a chalk limestone ridge, approximately 700 meters above sea level, overlooking Sachkhere. The castle's name, translating to "come and see," originates from a legend where nobleman Papuna Tsereteli built the fortress in response to his future father-in-law's demand for such a possession. Constructed in the 1730s, the fortress has served various roles throughout history, including as a residence for the Tsereteli princes and a strategic defense point. It faced numerous sieges and was even occupied by Russian forces in 1810. Archaeological excavations have revealed settlements dating back to the Early Bronze Age, highlighting the area's historical significance. The castle's architecture features two long walls, towers, a central house, a chapel, and a dungeon. Although partially damaged by an earthquake in 1991 and later restored in 2019, Modinakhe retains its charm and offers stunning views of the Kvirili River valley and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the grounds, imagine life within its walls, and appreciate the blend of history and natural beauty.
