Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the town of Mestia, the main hub in Svaneti. Head south on the main road (E117) for approximately 25 km towards the village of Zhabeshi. Once you reach Zhabeshi, look for a sign indicating the path to the Shkhara Glacier. You will need to park your car in a designated area near the trailhead, as the road may not be accessible for vehicles beyond this point. Make sure to check for any parking fees that may apply.
Public Transportation
To reach Shkhara Glacier using public transportation, take a minibus (marshrutka) from Mestia to the village of Zhabeshi. Marshrutkas depart regularly from the central bus station in Mestia. The journey takes around 30-40 minutes and costs approximately 5 GEL. Once you arrive in Zhabeshi, you will need to follow the marked hiking trail towards the glacier. Be prepared for a hike of about 2-3 hours, depending on your fitness level. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and check the weather conditions before you set out.
Hiking
From Zhabeshi, the trail to Shkhara Glacier is well-marked. Begin your hike by following the signs into the forest, where the path may be steep in places. As you climb higher, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The trail is approximately 8 km long and can take 2-3 hours to reach the glacier viewpoint. Ensure you carry enough water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the way. It is advisable to hike with a guide if you are unfamiliar with mountain trekking.
