Discover more about Alaverdi Monastery

Alaverdi Monastery, located 25 km from Akhmeta in the Kakheti region, is one of Georgia's most revered religious sites. Founded in the 6th century by the Assyrian monk Joseph Alaverdeli, the monastery has been a spiritual and cultural hub for centuries. The centerpiece of the complex is the Cathedral of Saint George, constructed in the 11th century under King Kvirike III. Until 2004, it was the tallest religious building in Georgia, reaching over 50 meters. The cathedral's architecture exemplifies Kakhetian style, characterized by its soaring height and austere exterior. Inside, visitors can admire ancient frescoes dating back to the 11th, 15th, and 17th centuries, offering glimpses into the region's rich artistic heritage. Throughout its history, Alaverdi Monastery has faced numerous challenges, including invasions and earthquakes. It was restored in the 15th and 18th centuries, with each restoration leaving its mark on the cathedral's appearance. Today, Alaverdi is a functioning monastery where monks continue the tradition of winemaking, using ancient qvevri (clay amphorae). Visitors can explore the monastery grounds, admire the cathedral's architecture, and learn about its history and cultural significance. The monastery also houses the tombs of St. Joseph of Alaverdi and Kakhetian kings.
