Discover more about Dzveli Shuamta's Monastery

Dzveli Shuamta Monastery, also known as Old Shuamta, is a historic Georgian Orthodox monastery located in the Kakheti region, approximately 7 kilometers west of Telavi. The name 'Shuamta' translates to 'between the mountains,' reflecting its secluded setting amidst the Gombori mountain range. This ancient complex comprises three churches, showcasing significant examples of early Christian architecture in Georgia. The monastery's structures include a 5th-century basilica, one of the oldest Christian buildings in Georgia, and two 7th-century domed churches. The largest of the domed churches bears a striking resemblance to the Jvari Monastery near Mtskheta, exhibiting similar architectural styles. All three churches are constructed from cobblestone, with travertine used for the corners. Inside, remnants of 12th-century paintings can still be observed. Dzveli Shuamta was abandoned in the 16th century. Later, the wife of King Levan II, Queen Tinatin, established the New Shuamta Monastery (Akhali Shuamta) nearby. In 2008, the Old Shuamta monastery underwent restoration. Today, Dzveli Shuamta attracts visitors with its historical significance, tranquil atmosphere, and the beautiful natural surroundings. It offers a unique opportunity to explore early Georgian religious architecture and experience a sense of peace and reflection.
