Discover more about Nekresi

Nekresi Monastery, perched high above the Alazani Valley in Kakheti, is a captivating blend of history, spirituality, and stunning natural beauty. The monastery's origins trace back to the 4th century when King Trdat of Iberia constructed a church above the ancient city of Nekresi. This marked the beginning of Nekresi as an important religious and cultural center in Georgia. The monastery's significance grew in the 6th century with the arrival of St. Abibos Nekreseli, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers who played a crucial role in strengthening Christianity in the region. St. Abibos founded the monastery and actively opposed Zoroastrianism, which led to his martyrdom. Nekresi also became a center of learning, with monks writing and copying manuscripts. The complex comprises several structures, including the 4th-century Mortuary Chapel, one of Georgia's oldest churches. The Church of the Dormition, dating back to the 6th century, features medieval frescoes. The Church of the Archangel, a unique 3-church basilica, was constructed in the 8th-9th centuries. The Bishop's Palace, a 9th-century two-story building, once housed a wine cellar. Visitors can also explore a four-story tower built in the 16th century. Nekresi's location offered strategic advantages, making it a target for invasions. Despite facing destruction during the Arab invasions of the 8th and 9th centuries, it was later restored by King David the Builder in the 12th century. Today, Nekresi Monastery stands as a symbol of resilience and a reminder of Georgia's rich cultural and religious heritage. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, enjoy panoramic views, and delve into the history of this sacred site.
