Discover more about Panoramic view

The Panoramic View at Tmogvi offers a rewarding hiking experience culminating in breathtaking vistas of the southern Georgian landscape. The main highlight is the Tmogvi Fortress (also known as Tmkaberd), a ruined citadel with a history dating back to the 9th century. Situated on a rocky massif overlooking the Kura River, the fortress once controlled a vital trade route. While the fortress itself is in ruins, the remains of its walls, towers, and a secret tunnel connecting to the river evoke a sense of its former grandeur. The fortress is spread across three hills, attesting to its strategic importance. Exploring the site involves some scrambling over boulders, but the panoramic views of the Kura River gorge and the surrounding countryside make the effort worthwhile. Visitors can also explore the ruins of the Saint Ephrem church, located near the fortress, which contains fragments of 13th-century frescoes. The area's desolate beauty and historical significance combine to create a memorable experience for adventurous travelers. The fortress has inspired artists and writers, including the Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan and the Russian poet Sophia Parnok.
