Discover more about Surami Fortress

Surami Fortress, located in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia, is a testament to the country's enduring spirit and strategic importance throughout history. Situated on a high, rocky cliff on the bank of the Suramula River, the fortress has commanded the crossroads of vital routes since its construction. One road leads west through the Likhi Range, and another travels south through the Borjomi Gorge. While the exact origins of the fortress remain debated, some historians trace its construction back to the 2nd century BC. However, most agree that it was erected in the 11th century, serving as a residence for the Surameli princes. Over the centuries, the fortress has been a focal point in numerous conflicts, serving as a stronghold for rebellious nobles and a battleground between the Ottomans and Persians. It even housed a Russian garrison in the 19th century. The fortress complex comprises the ancient walls, St. George's Church, a tower, and palace ruins. The upper fortress includes a fence, tower, church, palace ruins, and remains of agricultural buildings. A concealed escape tunnel, now blocked, hints at the fortress's defensive design. St. George's Church, built in the 11th to 12th centuries, features hewn stone walls and ornamentation. Legend has it that the fortress's strength is owed to a human sacrifice. According to the tale, the walls crumbled each night during construction until a young man named Zurab was immured within them. Locals say that his mother's tears still drip from the wall where he was entombed and that her ghost wanders the fortress ruins on moonlit nights, mourning her lost son. Visitors to Surami Fortress can explore the historic site, taking in the panoramic views and imagining the battles and sieges that once unfolded within its walls. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities, with trails leading to scenic viewpoints.
