Boekhandel Dominicanen, often called the Dominican Bookstore, is an enchanting literary landmark in the heart of Maastricht. However, in 1794, the French army captured Maastricht, leading to the church's repurposing for various secular uses, including a stable, warehouse, and even a bicycle shed. In 2006, the building was transformed into a bookstore, a collaborative effort between the Selexyz bookstore chain and architects Merkx + Girod. They created a harmonious blend of historic architecture and contemporary design. The interior features a monumental, multi-level walk-in bookcase, allowing visitors to explore the church's Gothic details up close. The bookstore boasts a vast collection of books, including English titles, and also has a music department with CDs and vinyl. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Blanche Dael Coffeelovers located in the former priest choir. Boekhandel Dominicanen hosts over 150 events each year, including book signings, lectures, debates, and musical performances.
