Kruiswegpark: A Tranquil Oasis in Roermond

Kruiswegpark, located in Roermond, is a unique and historical park that provides a tranquil retreat for visitors. Established in 1920, the park was designed by architect Dr. Pierre Cuypers and features a harmonious blend of religious and natural elements. The park's design incorporates a winding path structure, fourteen Stations of the Cross, a processional route with paintings depicting the Virgin Mary, and a central plaza at the base of Calvary Hill. The park's origins are closely linked to the Kapel in 't Zand (Chapel in the Sand), a significant pilgrimage site. The Redemptorist fathers, who settled near the chapel in 1862, played a crucial role in promoting pilgrimages to the site. The Kruiswegpark was created to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and provide a space for reflection and devotion. The park has a religious and recreational character. The Stations of the Cross, crafted from French limestone by Roermond sculptor Karel Lücker, depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. The Calvary Hill features sculptures by Jean Geelen, while the paintings along the processional route are the work of Albin Windhausen. The park's design incorporates the aesthetic principles of a picturesque landscape garden, creating an idyllic and surprising experience for visitors as they move from one area to another.
