    Discover more about Roman catacombs

The Roman Catacombs in Valkenburg offer a unique historical experience, transporting visitors back to the third and fourth centuries AD. These are not original Roman catacombs, but a detailed and faithful replica constructed in the early 1900s by Jan Diepen, inspired by his visits to Rome. Diepen, the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer, enlisted the help of renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, known for his work on the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, to bring his vision to life. The catacombs were painstakingly recreated in a local marl quarry, with Cuypers studying the Roman originals in depth. The result is a network of underground passages and burial chambers that replicate the atmosphere and artistry of the ancient catacombs. Visitors can explore replicas of various crypts and tombs, adorned with recreations of early Christian frescoes and sculptures. The experience is both educational and immersive. Guided tours, often conducted by candlelight, lead visitors through the subterranean labyrinth, detailing the history of the catacombs and the burial practices of the early Christians. The temperature within the catacombs remains a constant 12 degrees Celsius, adding to the authentic atmosphere. The museum also hosts exhibitions and events that explore themes related to the catacombs' historical significance, connecting ancient traditions with contemporary perspectives.
