Discover more about Théâtre de Liège

The Théâtre de Liège stands as a cultural beacon in the heart of Liège, Belgium, showcasing a dynamic blend of theatrical tradition and contemporary innovation. Housed within a meticulously renovated building on Place du Vingt Août, the theatre's history is as rich and layered as the performances it hosts. The building itself has witnessed significant historical events. The site was once home to the Société Libre d'Émulation, an association dedicated to promoting arts and sciences, established in 1779. However, the original Émulation building was destroyed in 1914 during German reprisals. It was rebuilt in 1939 by architect Julien Koenig in a neoclassical style, incorporating modern techniques of the time. In October 2013, the Théâtre de Liège found its new home within the renovated Émulation building. The renovation, led by the architectural firm Pierre Hebbelinck and Pierre de Wit, masterfully combines the building's neoclassical elements with contemporary design, using materials like wood, concrete, and glass. The result is a visually striking space spanning 7,800 square meters. The Théâtre de Liège offers a diverse program, including theatre, contemporary dance, classical and modern music, and interdisciplinary art performances. It serves as a platform for both local talents and international productions. The theatre also hosts contemporary art exhibitions in partnership with Belgian museums and art centers.
