The Eagle's Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus in German, is a historical building located on top of the Kehlstein mountain near Berchtesgaden. Constructed between 1937 and 1938, it was commissioned by Martin Bormann as a 50th birthday gift for Adolf Hitler, intended as a place for diplomatic meetings and to impress foreign leaders. Despite its construction and purpose, Hitler only visited the Eagle's Nest about 14 times, as he was reportedly afraid of heights. The Eagle's Nest is perched at an elevation of 1,834 meters (6,017 feet). The building itself is accessed via a special bus service that travels along a road blasted into the mountainside, a feat of engineering with a steep incline and several tunnels. Upon arrival at the bus terminus, visitors enter a tunnel leading to an elevator that ascends the final 124 meters to the building's entrance. Today, the Eagle's Nest serves as a restaurant and a historical landmark. Visitors can explore the building, enjoy panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps, and learn about the history of the site through an exhibition on the sun terrace. The exhibition provides information on the Obersalzberg area's transformation into a restricted zone for Nazi leaders and the construction of the Kehlstein Road and the Eagle's Nest. While much of the original interior has been removed, the building retains its historical aura, offering a poignant reminder of its past. The site is generally open from mid-May to late October, weather permitting.
