Discover more about Linderhof Palace

Linderhof Palace, located near Ettal in the Ammergau Alps, is a testament to the extravagant tastes of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Constructed between 1874 and 1878, it stands as the smallest of his three palaces and the only one completed during his lifetime. The palace was built as a royal villa in Rococo style. Ludwig, a great admirer of Louis XIV, the Sun King, designed Linderhof as his private sanctuary, drawing inspiration from Versailles. The palace interiors are lavishly decorated with scenes from Versailles and portraits of French courtiers. The Hall of Mirrors, the Dining Room with its disappearing table (which could be lowered to the kitchen below), and the opulent bedroom are highlights of the interior. The surrounding gardens are equally impressive, featuring terraced gardens, water parterres, and a large fountain that shoots water up to 22 meters. The park also contains several ornamental buildings, including the Venus Grotto, modeled after Wagner's opera 'Tannhauser'. Visitors can explore the palace only through guided tours, which last approximately 25 minutes and are available in German and English. The palace park is open to all visitors. Linderhof stands as a symbol of King Ludwig II's reclusive nature and his passion for art and beauty.
