    Discover more about Schloss Gartow

Schloss Gartow, located in the picturesque village of Gartow in the Wendland region of Lower Saxony, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. The castle's origins trace back to a fortress built in 1225 to protect the area from Slavic incursions. In 1694, Andreas Gottlieb von Bernstorff, a minister in the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, acquired the estate and commissioned the construction of the current Schloss Gartow between 1710 and 1727. The castle has been the seat of the Counts von Bernstorff for over 300 years and is still privately inhabited by the family. The Counts consider themselves custodians of the region's culture and history, hosting public concerts in the Baroque hall and preserving the estate's heritage. The family is deeply connected to the Evangelical Church and committed to sustainable practices, managing the surrounding forests and agricultural lands. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, admire the intricate details of the architecture, and stroll through the charming gardens. Guided tours, led by members of the von Bernstorff family, offer insights into the castle's history, art, and the family's contributions to European history. The tours include the park, the hall, and the historic library. Schloss Gartow also hosts cultural events and exhibitions, including the Gartow Pentecost Festival, which features classical music concerts. A Christmas market in the courtyard adds festive charm during the holiday season.
