    Discover more about Burg Falkenstein

Falkenstein Castle, also known as Burg Falkenstein, is a captivating medieval fortress perched high above the Selke Valley in the Harz Mountains. Constructed between 1120 and 1150 by the Lords of Konradsburg, who later became the Counts of Falkenstein, the castle stands as one of the best-preserved medieval strongholds in the region. Legend says the castle's origins trace back to a murder committed in 1080, leading to the construction of a new family seat on the mountain spur. The castle's architecture showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, reflecting centuries of modifications and expansions. Protected by seven gates and multiple defensive walls, the castle complex covers a substantial area, offering visitors a tangible sense of medieval defense strategies. The 31-meter-high bergfried (keep) provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and houses an observation tower open to the public. Burg Falkenstein gained historical significance in the early 13th century when Count Hoyer von Falkenstein commissioned Eike von Repgow to write the 'Sachsenspiegel,' the first German law book, within its walls. The castle has served various roles throughout its history, from a noble residence to a hunting lodge, and even a filming location for fairytale movies. Today, it operates as a museum, inviting visitors to explore its furnished rooms, castle kitchen, and falconry center, which hosts daily flight shows. Visitors can explore the castle's many features, including the restored great hall, the late Gothic church, and the old castle chapel. The castle inn, "Krummes Tor", offers refreshments within the castle grounds, accessible with the museum admission fee. The Harz walking pins stamp point is located at the first gate.
