The Rescue of Captain Igor Belikov memorial is located on the south side of Ernst-Reuter-Allee in Magdeburg, Germany, across from the building formerly known as Wilhelm-Pieck-Allee 24. The memorial commemorates an event that occurred on March 13, 1969, when Igor Belikov, a Soviet Air Force officer stationed in Zerbst, saved the life of four-year-old Kathrin Lehmann. While in Magdeburg for a medical check-up, Belikov witnessed Lehmann fall from a fifth-story window. Reacting quickly, he spread his military coat and caught the child, saving her from certain death. Belikov sustained a minor wrist injury, while the child was miraculously unharmed. The event garnered significant media attention and public sympathy. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) government used the event to promote German-Soviet friendship. Belikov was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor of the German-Soviet Friendship Society and was made an honorary citizen of Magdeburg. The bronze sculpture, created by Heinrich Apel, was installed in 1984. It depicts Belikov catching the falling child and serves as a reminder of his bravery and the bond between the German and Soviet people. Despite later re-evaluations of politically motivated honors after German reunification, Belikov's honorary citizenship was retained. He remained a celebrated figure in Magdeburg until his death in 2015. The memorial stands as a testament to a remarkable act of courage and a symbol of international goodwill. It is a reminder of a time when, despite political differences, human compassion prevailed.
