Discover more about Gruson-Gewächshäuser

The Gruson Greenhouses in Magdeburg offer a captivating journey through diverse plant ecosystems. Established in 1896, the greenhouses originated from the extensive private collection of industrialist Hermann Gruson, who bequeathed his plants and funds to the city. Today, the complex features ten exhibition halls spanning 4,000 square meters, displaying approximately 5,000 plant species and varieties from five continents. The Palm House, standing 16 meters tall, is a highlight, featuring various palm species and giant bamboo. A treetop path allows visitors to ascend into the canopy. Other houses showcase cacti and succulents from regions like the Andes, Mexico, and South Africa. The Victoria House displays the giant water lily, *Victoria amazonica*, alongside lotus, rice, and sugarcane. You can also explore a fern house with specimens over 130 years old and a Mediterranean house filled with camellias, citrus, and myrtle. Beyond the plants, the Gruson Greenhouses also house an aquarium and terrarium annex. The aquarium features a river landscape with fish from the Elbe, as well as Nile crocodiles and piranhas. The greenhouses suffered significant damage during World War II, but dedicated restoration efforts, including the Palm House reconstruction in 1986, have brought them back to their former glory. The original entrance was rebuilt in 2010.
