Köthen Castle, located in the heart of Köthen (Anhalt), Germany, is a historical landmark with a rich and varied past. Originally built as a moated castle in the 12th century, it served as the residence for the Princes and Dukes of Anhalt-Köthen from 1244 to 1847. The castle's architecture reflects different periods, with Renaissance structures and Baroque modifications.The castle gained prominence as Johann Sebastian Bach's workplace from 1717 to 1723. Employed by Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, Bach composed many instrumental works here, including the Brandenburg Concertos and the first part of the Well-Tempered Clavier. The Bach memorial center within the castle commemorates this musical legacy.Today, Köthen Castle houses several museums. The Historical Museum features exhibits on the castle's history and the German Language Experience. The Naumann Museum displays a collection of ornithological specimens. Visitors can also explore the castle grounds, including the Schlosspark and inner areas separated by a moat. The Hall of Mirrors, once the throne room, is a highlight, hosting concerts and events.
