Discover more about Alter Schlachthof

The Alter Schlachthof is located in the eastern district (Oststadt) of Karlsruhe. It's bordered to the north by Durlacher Allee, to the east by the Messplatz (exhibition grounds), and to the south and west by the Otto-Dullenkopf-Park and Schloss Gottesaue. This area, spanning over seven hectares, is under cultural monument protection as a whole. Originally, Karlsruhe's slaughterhouse was located in different parts of the city, with the first one built in 1726 at the Marktplatz. Due to odor complaints, it was moved to Ludwigsplatz in 1794, and then to Leopoldstraße in 1819 to address hygiene and capacity concerns. In 1883, the decision was made to relocate the slaughterhouse to a large area in the developing Oststadt. The new slaughterhouse began operations in 1887 and functioned until 2006. Since its closure, the Alter Schlachthof has been redeveloped into a creative park, comprising cultural centers and artistic institutions. The tenants of the creative park have united since 2010 in the association 'ausgeschlachtet e.V.'. The association aims to actively participate in the development of the area and communicate joint projects to the outside world. Today, the Alter Schlachthof is a dynamic space where art, culture, and commerce blend seamlessly. Visitors can explore art galleries, attend live music events at venues like the Tollhaus and Substage, enjoy diverse culinary offerings, and witness innovative startups in repurposed spaces.
