German submarine U-995
U-995: A Submarine Frozen in Time
Guiding ships into Kiel for over a century, the Leuchtturm Friedrichsort stands as a beacon of maritime history and a picturesque landmark on the Baltic Sea.
The Leuchtturm Friedrichsort, a striking green and white lighthouse, stands proudly on a small island off Falckensteiner Strand, marking the entrance to the Kiel Fjord and the Kiel Canal. Since 1971, this 31.7-meter-tall concrete tower has guided ships safely past the Klever Berg and Au-Haken shallows. Replacing an earlier, shorter lighthouse, it now features advanced navigational technology, including a fog signal and water level monitoring. While the lighthouse itself isn't open to the public, its picturesque location makes it a popular spot for walks along the beach, offering stunning views of the Baltic Sea and the bustling maritime traffic. The foundations of the old lighthouse can still be seen next to the new one, and the tower house of the old lighthouse can be found in Friedrichsort on the Friedrichsorter Strasse.
