Schärtenspitze: A Climber's Delight in the Berchtesgaden Alps
Conquer the Schärtenspitze for breathtaking alpine views; a challenging climb in the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park.
The Schärtenspitze, standing at 2,153 meters (7,064 feet), is part of the Hochkalter massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. Located near Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, this peak is a popular destination for experienced mountain hikers and climbers seeking a rewarding alpine experience. The ascent to the Schärtenspitze is considered difficult, requiring a good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and experience in alpine terrain. The route often involves partially secured climbing sections, with some exposed areas near the summit. Many hikers begin their journey from the Blaueishütte, a mountain hut that offers stunning views of the Blaueis glacier, the northernmost glacier in the Alps. From the summit, hikers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Berchtesgaden National Park. The iconic Watzmann and the impressive Hochkalter massif dominate the landscape, while the Blaueis glacier can be seen below. The Schärtenspitze's exposed rocky summit provides limited space, often shared with fellow climbers, adding to the adventurous atmosphere. The mountain's history is also captivating. Around 3,500 years ago, a massive rockslide occurred between the Steinberg and Schärtenspitze, resulting in 15 million cubic meters of rock plummeting into the valley. This natural event dammed up a lake, creating what is now known as the Hintersee.
