Discover more about Watzmann Mittelspitze

Watzmann Mittelspitze, or Middle Peak, is the crowning point of the Watzmann massif, the third highest mountain in Germany and the highest peak located entirely within German territory. This iconic mountain, situated in Berchtesgaden National Park, Bavaria, presents a formidable challenge to experienced hikers and mountaineers. The Watzmann massif itself is steeped in legend, said to be a cruel king turned to stone with his family as punishment for his misdeeds. The Mittelspitze is the central of three main peaks along a dramatic ridge, flanked by the Hocheck (2,651m) and the Südspitze (2,712m). The imposing East Face of the Watzmann, rising approximately 1,800 meters from the valley floor, is one of the tallest rock faces in the Eastern Alps, attracting experienced climbers. The ascent to Mittelspitze is a demanding alpine trek, requiring sure-footedness, a head for heights, and experience in exposed terrain. The route often involves scrambling and the use of fixed cables, particularly along the ridge connecting the peaks. While not technically a via ferrata, a via ferrata set and helmet are recommended. Weather conditions in the Alps can change rapidly, making a stable forecast essential before attempting the climb. Despite the challenges, reaching the summit of Watzmann Mittelspitze rewards climbers with unparalleled panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden Alps, the Königssee lake, and the surrounding Bavarian landscape.
