Discover more about Teufelsmühle

Teufelsmühle, translated as Devil's Mill, is a prominent mountain in the Northern Black Forest, reaching an elevation of 908 meters. Situated south of Loffenau, between the Murg and Alb valleys, it's a favored destination for those seeking scenic vistas and Black Forest hospitality. The mountain's name originates not from a literal mill, but from a local interpretation of glacial stone formations. Legend tells of a miller who contracted the devil to build a mill, exchanging his soul in the bargain. The scattered boulders atop the mountain are said to be remnants of this mill. A key feature is the Teufelsmühle Tower, a red sandstone observation tower. Originally built in 1910 at a height of 10 meters, it was extended to 16.2 meters in 1952, offering views across the Albtal, Murgtal and Rhine valley. Close to the tower is the Höhengasthaus Teufelsmühle, a mountain inn providing traditional cuisine and a place to relax. The inn is open weekends. The area is a hub for outdoor activities, particularly hiking and mountain biking. The mountain also serves as a launch site for hang gliders, operated by the Loffenau Hang Gliding Club since 1977.
