Discover more about Black Forest Open Air Museum

The Black Forest Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof, located in Gutach, is more than just a museum; it's a portal to the past, offering an immersive experience of rural life in the Black Forest over the last 400 years. Founded in 1964, the museum transports visitors to a world of traditional farmhouses, workshops, and mills, showcasing the unique architecture, customs, and traditions of the region. The heart of the museum is the Vogtsbauernhof farmhouse, dating back to 1612. This original farmhouse, along with other carefully dismantled and reconstructed buildings from various parts of the Black Forest, creates a living village that vividly portrays the daily lives of Black Forest residents throughout history. As you wander through the museum grounds, you'll encounter six fully furnished farmhouses, each representing a different era and region of the Black Forest. These include the Hippenseppenhof (built in 1599), the Lorenzenhof (built in 1608), the Hotzenwaldhaus (built in 1756), the Schauinslandhaus (built in 1730), and the Falkenhof (built in 1737). You can explore the interiors of these historic homes and wander through stables housing ancient breeds of domestic animals. Beyond the buildings themselves, the Black Forest Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof brings history to life through demonstrations of traditional crafts. You might witness a blacksmith forging tools, a weaver creating intricate textiles, or a miller grinding grain. Children will especially enjoy the museum's animal encounters, with opportunities to see and interact with farm animals such as sheep, goats, and chickens. The museum also features a day laborer's cottage (built in 1819), barns, stalls, a chapel (built in 1736), a storehouse (built between 1601 and 1746) and a granny house (built in 1352). The museum is open daily from the end of March to early November.
