Marktplatz: Düsseldorf's Historic Heart
Discover Düsseldorf's Marktplatz: A historic square in the heart of the Old Town, offering stunning architecture, vibrant events, and a glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage.
The Marktplatz, the vibrant heart of Düsseldorf's Altstadt (Old Town), has been the city's central hub since the 14th century. This picturesque square, easily explored on foot, is framed by impressive Baroque and Neo-Renaissance buildings, most notably the Rathaus (City Hall). The square comes alive with various cultural events, from the lively Carnival celebrations that run from November to Ash Wednesday to the enchanting Christmas market held from late November through December. The iconic equestrian statue of Jan Wellem II, designed by Gabriel Grupello in 1711, stands proudly in the square's center, a testament to the city's rich history and artistic heritage. A smaller statue of a boy commemorates the legend of a young apprentice who collected silver for Grupello's monument. Today, the Marktplatz remains a popular meeting place and a must-see destination for visitors.
