Discover more about Kahle Pön

Kahle Pön, located near Medebach in the Sauerland region of Germany, is a remarkable nature preserve characterized by its expansive high heath landscape. Rising to an elevation of 774 meters, this plateau presents visitors with breathtaking panoramic views and a unique ecological environment. The name 'Kahle Pön' translates to 'Bald Hill,' a fitting description considering its historical lack of tree cover. Historical records and photographs from the 1920s depict Kahle Pön as a virtually treeless expanse, true to its name. However, in the 1950s, a decision was made to afforest portions of the area with spruce trees. This reforestation effort, unfortunately, had adverse effects on the local microclimate and the delicate heathland ecosystem. The introduction of spruce trees altered the soil composition, reduced sunlight penetration, and disrupted the natural balance of the environment. Today, Kahle Pön encompasses approximately 30 hectares and is subject to intensive conservation management practices aimed at preserving and restoring its valuable heathland vegetation. These measures include specialized ploughing techniques and grazing by sheep and goats. The sheep help to keep grasses and herbs short, preventing them from overshadowing the heathland plants, while the goats consume fast-growing saplings from trees and shrubs, effectively hindering reforestation and promoting heathland regeneration. The area is renowned for its diverse and abundant flora, including iconic heathland species such as broom heather, lingonberry, bilberry, club moss, and arnica. These plants contribute to the vibrant colors and textures of the landscape, creating a visually stunning and ecologically significant habitat. Kahle Pön also provides a crucial habitat for a wide array of fauna, including 46 species of breeding birds. Among these are the rare great grey shrike and red-backed shrike, both of which are of conservation concern. The area also supports high breeding populations of tree pipit and meadow pipit, further highlighting its importance for avian biodiversity. During migration seasons, birdwatchers can observe wheatears and the northern ring ouzel, adding to the area's appeal for ornithologists. Butterfly enthusiasts will be delighted by the presence of 68 recorded butterfly species at Kahle Pön, including typical high heathland specialists such as the mountain blueberry budmoth and the blueberry moth. These insects play vital roles in pollination and contribute to the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem. In addition, 16 beetle species, including the heath leaf beetle and the scarlet fire beetle, have been documented, showcasing the area's rich invertebrate diversity. Visitors can explore the beauty and ecological significance of Kahle Pön by following the 'Blick-ins-Land Kahle Pön' quality trail. This well-maintained hiking route offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and provides opportunities to discover old boundary stones dating back to 1769. These stones mark the historical border between the Principality of Waldeck (represented by a star on the north side) and Kur-Köln (represented by a cross on the south side), which corresponds to the present-day border between the states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. The U4 hiking trail also leads to the edge of the Pön plateau, offering another perspective on this unique landscape. To ensure the preservation of this valuable biotope, visitors are encouraged to stay on the designated hiking trails and avoid disturbing the fragile vegetation and wildlife. Kahle Pön offers a diverse range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking is a popular pastime, with numerous trails catering to different skill levels. The 'Blick-ins-Land Kahle Pön' trail is a relatively easy 7.7 km loop, taking around 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete, while the 'Naturweg Kahler Pön' is a 7 km premium trail that leads through one of the few remaining high heaths on the ridges of the Sauerland. For a longer hike, the 'Rundwanderung Usseln - Hohe Pön-Kahle Pön-Usseler Kreuz-Diemelquelle' is a 12.8 km loop that takes around 3 hours and 35 minutes. Beyond hiking, Kahle Pön is an excellent destination for nature photography, birdwatching, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the natural world. The best times to visit are during the late summer and early autumn when the heather is in full bloom, creating a spectacular display of purple hues across the landscape.
