Discover more about Ordensburg Vogelsang

Ordensburg Vogelsang, a sprawling complex within the Eifel National Park, carries a weighty history. Constructed between 1936 and 1939, it served as a training facility for future leaders of the Nazi regime. The architecture, imposing and monumental, was designed to project power and instill a sense of superiority. However, the intended purpose of Vogelsang was cut short by the outbreak of World War II, and the site was repurposed for military use. Following the war, the complex transitioned into a military training area, first under British and then Belgian forces, for several decades. This period saw further alterations and additions to the site. In 2006, a new chapter began as Vogelsang IP (International Place) was established, transforming the area into a center for education, culture, and remembrance. Today, Vogelsang IP stands as a testament to the enduring power of reflection and reconciliation. The heart of Vogelsang IP is the Forum Vogelsang IP, a modern visitor center that houses two main exhibitions. The NS Documentation "Destiny: Master Race" delves into the history of the Nazi Ordensburgen, exploring the ideology, the individuals who were trained there, and the crimes committed in the name of racial supremacy. This exhibition is a sobering and essential experience, prompting visitors to confront the darkest chapters of German history. In stark contrast, the Eifel National Park Centre's "Wilderness Dreams" exhibition celebrates the natural beauty and biodiversity of the surrounding national park. This interactive exhibit allows visitors to explore the flora and fauna of the region, learn about conservation efforts, and appreciate the importance of preserving our natural heritage. The juxtaposition of these two exhibitions – one focused on historical atrocities, the other on natural wonders – creates a powerful and thought-provoking experience. Beyond the exhibitions, Vogelsang IP offers a range of activities and attractions. Visitors can take guided tours of the grounds, exploring the architecture and learning about the site's multifaceted history. The Vogelsang Tower, a former water tower, offers panoramic views of the complex and the surrounding Eifel National Park. Hiking trails wind through the area, providing opportunities to explore the natural landscape and reflect on the site's significance. The nearby ghost town of Wollseifen adds another layer of historical intrigue to the Vogelsang experience. Evacuated to make way for the military training area, Wollseifen stands as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and displacement. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the village and learn about its history. Vogelsang IP is more than just a historical site; it is a place of learning, reflection, and dialogue. The center hosts a variety of educational programs, workshops, and events that address issues of tolerance, diversity, and peaceful coexistence. By confronting the past and engaging with the present, Vogelsang IP strives to create a more just and equitable future. The site is easily accessible and offers various amenities for visitors. The Forum Vogelsang IP houses a restaurant with panoramic views, a shop, and visitor information services. The complex is largely accessible to people with disabilities, with accessible parking, restrooms, and exhibition spaces. Audio guides are available in multiple languages, ensuring that visitors from around the world can engage with the site's history and message. Vogelsang IP is a place that challenges, inspires, and transforms. It is a destination that should be on the itinerary of anyone interested in history, nature, and the enduring power of the human spirit. The combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and educational opportunities makes Vogelsang IP a truly unique and unforgettable experience. The site serves as a reminder of the importance of confronting the past, celebrating the present, and working towards a better future for all.
