Discover more about Fotografie-Forum der StädteRegion Aachen in Monschau

Nestled in the heart of Monschau's picturesque Altstadt (old town), the Fotografie-Forum der StädteRegion Aachen offers a captivating journey through the world of photography. Housed in a meticulously renovated building at Austraße 9, the forum has evolved into a cultural hub that celebrates the art of visual storytelling. Originally established in 2002 as the Kunst- und Kulturzentrum (KuK), the building itself boasts a rich history. Constructed around 1870, it served various purposes throughout the 20th century, including a primary school, a finance office, and even a home for asylum seekers. In 2002, the building underwent extensive renovations, transforming it into a modern exhibition space while preserving its historical character. The interior features a series of cabinet-like rooms spread across three floors, creating an intimate setting for viewing photography. In its early years, KuK functioned as an atelier house for artists, fostering creative exchange between artists and art enthusiasts. The concept was recognized in February 2007 when the initiative "Deutschland – Land der Ideen" (Germany – Land of Ideas), under the patronage of then-Federal President Horst Köhler, honored the center for its innovative concept and vibrant implementation. Since 2011, the focus has shifted increasingly towards photography. The atelier spaces have been replaced by exhibition areas, and the forum now hosts four to five photography exhibitions each year. It has also established its own photographic collection, comprising around 500 works acquired through donations and purchases. In November 2023, the Fotografie-Forum awarded an art prize for photography for the first time, awarded by the support association of the Fotografie-Forum in cooperation with the Aachen City Region; the first winner was Barbara Klemm. The Fotografie-Forum presents a diverse range of photographic art, from historical works to contemporary creations. The exhibitions often feature internationally renowned photographers, offering visitors the chance to see works by masters of the medium. Past exhibitions have included works by Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Dana Gluckstein, Ken Heyman, Herbert List, Vivian Maier, Max Scheler, and Lotte and Ruth Jacobi. Many of the exhibitions are exclusively on display at the Fotografie-Forum or curated specifically for the venue. In addition to showcasing established artists, the Fotografie-Forum also provides a platform for emerging photographers from the region. The SHIFT project, for example, brings together local talents and offers them the opportunity to exhibit their work alongside international stars. A scholarship program even enables a young talent to realize a project that is then presented to the public in a solo exhibition. The Fotografie-Forum is more than just an exhibition space; it is a place for dialogue and exchange. Vernissages and other events provide opportunities for artists, experts, and art enthusiasts to connect and discuss the world of photography. The forum also offers educational programs for young people, introducing them to the art of photography through guided tours, workshops, and other activities. A learning studio for young people is planned for 2022/23. The Fotografie-Forum is located just a short walk from Monschau's Markt (market square) and directly opposite the Aukloster (Aukloster Abbey). Its central location makes it easily accessible to visitors exploring the town's historic center. The building is also close to other attractions, such as the Rotes Haus (Red House) and the Burg Monschau (Monschau Castle). Visiting the Fotografie-Forum is free of charge, making it an accessible cultural experience for everyone. The forum is open Tuesday to Friday from 2 pm to 5 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. It is closed on Mondays. The Fotografie-Forum der StädteRegion Aachen is a must-see destination for anyone interested in photography. With its diverse exhibitions, educational programs, and central location, it offers a unique and enriching cultural experience in the heart of Monschau's historic old town. Whether you are a seasoned photography enthusiast or simply curious about the medium, the Fotografie-Forum is sure to inspire and delight.
