Deserteurdenkmal: A Memorial to Resistance

A powerful memorial in Erfurt honoring Wehrmacht deserters and victims of Nazi military justice, a place for reflection on courage, resistance, and the cost of war.

4.1

The Deserteurdenkmal, or Deserter Memorial, in Erfurt stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the courage of individuals who resisted the Nazi regime. Located at the foot of the Zitadelle Petersberg, the memorial commemorates those who deserted the German Wehrmacht during World War II and the victims of Nazi military justice. The Zitadelle Petersberg itself bears a grim history. From 1935, the Kommandantenhaus (Commander's House) housed a military court that sentenced approximately 60 deserters to death. The condemned were held in the basement cells of the Defensionskaserne, and many executions took place near where the memorial now stands. This historical context amplifies the memorial's significance, grounding it in the very place where these acts of injustice occurred. The initiative to create the Deserteurdenkmal arose in November 1994, with the aim of dedicating it on May 8, 1995, the 50th anniversary of liberation from Nazi rule. A diverse group comprising trade unions, peace organizations, former deserters, victims of National Socialism, church representatives, and artists collaborated on the project. In January 1995, they selected a concept by artist Thomas Nicolai and worked with him and young skilled workers from Deutsche Bahn AG to develop the memorial. Unveiled on September 1, 1995, the Deserteurdenkmal is an abstract work consisting of two parallel rows of eight metal stelae. These steel columns evoke a sense of confinement and the material's association with the material battles of World War II. One stele, distinctively shaped, represents the deserter, symbolizing the individual's struggle against a rigid and oppressive system. The arrangement of the stelae creates a narrow passage, reminiscent of a gauntlet, conveying feelings of oppression, uniformity, and hopelessness. The sharp edges of the stelae's bases further enhance this sense of unease. Nicolai's design explores the tension between the individual and societal systems, highlighting the importance of self-determination when faced with intolerable circumstances. The memorial prompts reflection on obedience, conformity, and the right to refuse participation in unjust systems. The Deserteurdenkmal has sparked considerable debate and discussion since its creation. While some view it as a vital symbol of resistance and a necessary confrontation with Germany's past, others have been critical. Despite the initial reluctance of Erfurt's mayor, the city council eventually approved the allocation of a prominent location on Petersberg for the memorial. Today, the Deserteurdenkmal is a place of remembrance and reflection. Wreath-laying ceremonies take place annually on September 1st. The memorial is included in guided tours focusing on Erfurt's Nazi history, and in 2013, the Thuringian Ministry of Justice incorporated it into the "Thuringian Street of Human Rights and Democracy." Visiting the Deserteurdenkmal offers a profound experience, encouraging contemplation on the complexities of war, individual responsibility, and the enduring pursuit of peace and justice. It serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, acts of courage and resistance can emerge, challenging oppressive regimes and inspiring future generations to stand up for what is right. The memorial is located in the fortress ditch of the Zitadelle Petersberg, facing the old town (Andreasviertel). It is accessible via a footpath that branches off to the right before the main gate, approximately 200 meters away. The site is intentionally secluded, providing a quiet space for contemplation. In 2010, an exhibition titled "What Was Right Then... Soldiers and Civilians Before Courts of the Wehrmacht" was held at the Peterskirche, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the memorial's opening. This exhibition further explored the themes of military justice and the experiences of those who resisted the Nazi regime. The Deserteurdenkmal stands as a testament to the importance of remembering the past, acknowledging the suffering of victims, and honoring those who chose conscience over conformity. It is a place where visitors can connect with history, reflect on the present, and consider the future, striving for a world where such acts of resistance are no longer necessary.
