Ballhofplatz: A Historic Heart in Hannover
Discover Hannover's oldest parish church, the Kreuzkirche, a blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture housing historical treasures and hosting vibrant cultural events in the heart of the Old Town.
The Kreuzkirche, or Church of the Holy Cross, stands as a testament to Hannover's resilience and rich history. Consecrated in 1333, this Lutheran church is one of the three remaining old town churches, nestled within the charming Kreuzkirchenviertel. Despite suffering significant damage during World War II, it was lovingly rebuilt, incorporating both historical elements and modern design. The church boasts a captivating interior, featuring an altar painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder and the Duve Chapel, a baroque addition housing a merchant family's vault. Today, the Kreuzkirche serves not only as a place of worship but also as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and community events, making it a must-see for any visitor exploring Hannover's historical heart. Its serene atmosphere and architectural blend offer a unique glimpse into the city's past and present.
