The Neues Haus, or 'New House,' in Hanover, isn't a building but a significant public space steeped in history. Originally the site of an elegant concert café built in 1894, the area was transformed in 1970 with the construction of the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover (University of Music, Drama and Media). The iconic entrance arcades of the former café were preserved and relocated to Emmichplatz, which was then renamed Neues Haus in 2019. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub connecting the university with the city, hosting cultural events and offering a glimpse into Hanover's rich past. Discover more about Neues Haus

The story of Neues Haus in Hanover is one of transformation and remembrance, a testament to the city's evolving identity. What stands today as a public square, officially renamed 'Neues Haus' in 2019, was once the location of a beloved concert café that played a vital role in Hanover's social and cultural life. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the area outside the city walls, near the Eilenriede forest, served a practical purpose. A 'Siechenlazarett,' or isolation hospital, was built in 1712/13 to prevent the spread of plague from neighboring Bremen and Verden. Fortunately, the plague never reached Hanover, and the building was repurposed as a residence for a wood warden. This evolved into a popular tavern known as 'Zum goldenen Löwen' and later as a wine tavern, marking the beginning of the area's association with hospitality and leisure. In 1894, architect Paul Rowald designed an elegant concert café, which was named Neues Haus. City garden inspector Julius Trip designed the terraces, a large concert garden, and the surrounding garden and park areas. Trip also redesigned the front Eilenriede, starting at the Neues Haus, into a forest park around 1900. "Hanover's most beautiful forest inn," the Neues Haus, was close to the city, easily accessible by the former streetcar, and a popular destination for decades because of its excellent concerts. However, the winds of change swept through Hanover in the 20th century. The rise of motorization gradually diminished the appeal of Neues Haus and other excursion destinations. In 1933, the Nazi regime renamed the square 'Am Neuen Hause' after Otto von Emmich, a commanding general. In 1936, the Neues Haus was closed, and in 1937, it was handed over to the NS-Frauenschaft (the Nazi women's organization) as the 'Haus der Frau.' The original Neues Haus was demolished in 1970 to make way for the construction of the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover (HMTMH). However, the memory of the iconic café was not entirely erased. The entrance arcades and pavilion of the former Neues Haus were carefully preserved and re-erected on Emmichplatz, serving as a tangible link to the past. Today, the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover stands as a prominent institution, known for its distinctive architecture. From above, the building's design resembles an 'ear,' a playful nod to its focus on music and auditory arts. The university hosts numerous public events throughout the year, contributing significantly to Hanover's cultural landscape. In 2019, the city officially renamed Emmichplatz to 'Neues Haus,' finally restoring the historical name to the public space. The arcades serve as a reminder of the area's rich history, while the square itself functions as a vibrant meeting place for students, locals, and visitors alike. Visiting Neues Haus offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Hanover's past and present. The preserved arcades evoke a sense of nostalgia for the elegant concert café that once stood there, while the modern university building symbolizes the city's commitment to arts and education. The square itself is a dynamic space, hosting events and serving as a gateway to the Eilenriede forest, inviting exploration and discovery. Beyond the immediate vicinity of Neues Haus, visitors can explore the broader Oststadt district, known for its late-19th-century housing stock adorned with elaborate historicist and Art Nouveau decorations. This architectural richness provides a glimpse into Hanover's prosperous past and offers a delightful contrast to the modern structures in the city center. Neues Haus is more than just a place; it's a story etched in stone and space, inviting visitors to connect with Hanover's multifaceted identity.
