Michaelstein Abbey: A Harmony of History, Gardens, and Music

Michaelstein Abbey, or Kloster Michaelstein, is a former Cistercian monastery that has transformed into a vibrant center for music, history, and horticulture. Located near Blankenburg in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the abbey offers a unique blend of cultural experiences that appeal to a wide range of interests. During the early 18th century, Duke Ludwig Rudolf initiated extensive construction projects and established a seminary for preachers. In recent decades, Michaelstein Abbey has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a hub of cultural diversity centered around nature, monastery history, and music. Today, the abbey is home to the Saxony-Anhalt Music Academy for Education and Performance, which has earned a prominent place in the European professional music scene. The medieval cloister buildings, including the monastery gardens and the music exhibition, are open to the public as a museum. The music exhibition, "KlangZeitRaum – On the trail of the secret of music," is housed in the Baroque west wing of the cloister building. This fascinating exhibition traces the evolution of music over the centuries, showcasing instruments from the last four centuries from across Europe. An impressive sound and light installation of baroque church music, a musical salon with talks and music from famous guests, models, and experimental stations for sound production, and listening sessions with anecdotes and caricatures bring the music to life. One of the highlights of the music exhibition is the Salomon de Caus music machine, a unique reconstruction of a 17th-century water organ designed for the Heidelberg castle garden. The original machine was never built due to the Thirty Years' War, but this faithful reproduction allows visitors to experience the sounds and spectacle of this innovative musical device. Michaelstein Abbey hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, guided tours, and workshops for all ages.
