The Thick Tower: A Fortress with a View
Explore the imposing Thick Tower at Heidelberg Castle, a testament to 16th-century military might transformed into an elegant space with breathtaking views of Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley.
The Thick Tower (Dicker Turm) at Heidelberg Castle is a massive remnant of 16th-century fortifications, offering a glimpse into the castle's strategic past. Built in 1533 by Ludwig V, its walls, some seven meters thick, were designed to withstand intense artillery fire. Later, Frederick V transformed the tower's upper levels into a luxurious space for dining and entertainment, providing breathtaking views of Heidelberg and the Neckar River Valley. Though partially destroyed in subsequent wars, the Thick Tower remains a symbol of the castle's resilience and offers visitors a unique perspective on its layered history and architectural evolution. Today, it stands as a testament to both military might and refined elegance, making it a must-see landmark within the Heidelberg Castle complex, inviting exploration and appreciation of its historical significance.

Walking
From the Kornmarkt in Heidelberg's Altstadt, the most direct route to the Thick Tower involves a moderately steep uphill walk of approximately 15-20 minutes. Follow Burgweg, the main path leading towards Heidelberg Castle. As you ascend, you'll pass the lower funicular station on your right. Continue along Burgweg, following signs for the Schloss (castle). The path winds upwards, offering increasingly impressive views of the Altstadt. Once you enter the castle grounds through the main gate, follow signs directing you towards the Englischer Bau (English Wing). The Thick Tower is located on the west side of the English Wing. Note that the walk involves some inclines and cobblestone paths.

Public Transport
The Bergbahn (funicular) offers a convenient alternative to walking. From the Kornmarkt, the lower funicular station is easily accessible. Purchase a ticket for the 'Schloss' (castle) section.
