Discover more about Schleswig-Holstein Landesmuseum

Schloss Gottorf, home to the Schleswig-Holstein Landesmuseum, stands as a testament to the rich and complex history of Schleswig-Holstein. For over eight centuries, this site has evolved from a medieval fortification into a stunning Baroque palace, bearing witness to the shifting tides of power, art, and culture in Northern Europe. The museum itself is divided into several distinct collections, each offering a unique glimpse into the past. The Museum of Art and Cultural History showcases the artistic achievements of the region, from medieval religious art to contemporary masterpieces. Highlights include an impressive collection of faience, paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and works by 20th-century German Expressionists such as Emil Nolde and Ernst Barlach. The Archaeological Museum delves into the prehistory and early history of Schleswig-Holstein, displaying artifacts from the Stone Age to the Viking Age. Among its treasures are the Nydam Boat, a remarkably well-preserved rowing vessel from the 4th century, and several bog bodies, including the famous Windeby Girl. Beyond the collections, Schloss Gottorf's architecture and grounds are attractions in their own right. The palace's various wings reflect different periods of construction, from the medieval west wing to the Baroque south wing. The Schlosskapelle, or palace chapel, is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture, while the Hirschsaal, once a banquet hall, features intricate bas-reliefs of deer. The reconstructed Neuwerkgarten, one of the earliest Baroque gardens in Northern Europe, offers a tranquil escape with its formal flowerbeds, fountains, and sculptures. At its heart stands the Gottorf Globe, a replica of the 17th-century planetarium that once graced the palace. This technological marvel allowed visitors to explore the constellations and planets, offering a glimpse into the scientific knowledge of the time. Schloss Gottorf's history is as captivating as its collections. Originally built in the 12th century as a bishop's residence, it later became the seat of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, a powerful dynasty that played a significant role in European politics. The Dukes transformed the castle into a center of art and learning, attracting scholars, artists, and craftsmen from across the continent. During the 18th century, the castle served as the residence of the Danish governors of Schleswig, and later as a barracks. In the aftermath of World War II, it was repurposed to house the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums, opening its doors to the public as a museum complex in 1948. Today, Schloss Gottorf continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to modernize its facilities and enhance the visitor experience. A master plan is in place to guide the museum's development, ensuring that it remains a vibrant center for art, culture, and history for generations to come. Visitors can explore the permanent collections, attend special exhibitions, participate in guided tours and workshops, or simply wander through the gardens and soak up the atmosphere of this historic site. Whether you're interested in art, archaeology, or simply the sweep of history, Schloss Gottorf offers a captivating and enriching experience. Throughout the year, Schloss Gottorf hosts a variety of events, including concerts, theatrical performances, and historical reenactments. These events bring the castle's history to life, offering visitors a chance to experience the past in a dynamic and engaging way. The museum also offers educational programs for children and adults, providing opportunities to learn about art, history, and archaeology in a hands-on setting. Schloss Gottorf is more than just a museum; it's a living monument to the history and culture of Schleswig-Holstein. Its diverse collections, stunning architecture, and beautiful grounds make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting the region.
