Overview

The Wankbahn, located in the charming Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, offers an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mount Wank, a peak renowned for its unparalleled panoramic views. For nearly a century, this iconic cable car has transported visitors to an alpine paradise, where they can immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of the Bavarian Alps. The Wank's name, while amusing to English speakers, originates from an old German word for "slope" or "bend." Rising to 1,780 meters (5,840 feet), the mountain provides stunning vistas of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak), and the Wetterstein mountain range. The mountain's accessible summit and diverse trail network make it a popular destination for hikers, day-trippers, and those seeking a tranquil escape into nature. The Wankbahn's history dates back to the late 1920s, with construction beginning in 1928 and the cable car officially opening in 1929. This pioneering project was undertaken by Wank-Bahn AG, driven by the vision of opening up the mountain's beauty to a wider audience. The cable car stretches 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), ascending from 740 meters (2,430 feet) at the valley station to 1,750 meters (5,740 feet) at the summit. Over the years, the Wankbahn has undergone several upgrades to enhance its capacity and ensure a safe and comfortable ride for passengers. At the summit, visitors are greeted by a sprawling grassy expanse, perfect for leisurely strolls and picnics. A prominent feature is the summit cross, erected in 1904, which serves as a popular spot for photographs and contemplation. Nearby, the Wankhaus, also known as the Alois Huber Haus, offers traditional Bavarian cuisine and refreshments, providing a cozy respite after a hike or cable car ride. The Wankhaus was originally built in 1911 by the local branch of the German Alpine Association (DAV) and has been renovated and upgraded several times since then. The Wank is a haven for hikers of all skill levels. Numerous well-maintained trails crisscross the mountain, offering a range of options from gentle walks to challenging climbs. A popular panorama trail loops around the peak, providing stunning 360-degree views. For those seeking a more strenuous adventure, trails lead down to the mid-station or even all the way to the valley, passing through picturesque meadows and forests. While skiing operations on Mount Wank were discontinued in 2002, the mountain remains a popular destination for winter mountaineering and snowshoeing. The Wankhaus's enterprising hut keeper often prepares a snowcat track from the Esterbergalm to the hut entrance, making the ascent easier for winter enthusiasts. The Wank's fame extends beyond its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The mountain also houses a scientific observatory that plays a vital role in monitoring atmospheric and climatic conditions. This observatory contributes to our understanding of the environment and the impact of climate change. The Wankbahn and Mount Wank offer a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and Bavarian hospitality. Whether you're seeking a challenging hike, a leisurely cable car ride, or simply a place to soak in the stunning alpine scenery, the Wank is an unforgettable destination. The mountain's rich history, diverse trail network, and panoramic views make it a must-see attraction for any visitor to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Beyond the panoramic views and hiking trails, Mount Wank offers a glimpse into Bavarian culture and traditions. The Wankhaus serves as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike, where they can enjoy traditional dishes, local beers, and the warm hospitality that Bavaria is known for. Throughout the year, the mountain hosts various events and festivals, celebrating the region's heritage and providing opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture. The Wankbahn is more than just a cable car; it's a gateway to an alpine paradise. It's a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. It's an opportunity to challenge yourself physically and mentally, and to be rewarded with breathtaking views that will stay with you long after you've descended the mountain. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a first-time visitor to the Alps, the Wankbahn and Mount Wank offer an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable.
