    Discover more about Eltville Castle

Eltville Castle, known locally as Kurfürstliche Burg, stands as a proud testament to the rich history of Eltville am Rhein, a picturesque town nestled in the Rheingau region of Germany. This enchanting castle, with its origins in the 14th century, has witnessed centuries of change and played a significant role in the region's political and cultural landscape. The castle's story begins in 1330 when Balduin of Trier, Archbishop of Mainz, initiated its construction. The castle was completed around 1350 by Heinrich von Virneburg. For the next 150 years, it served as the residence of the Archbishops and Electors of Mainz, powerful figures in the Holy Roman Empire. These prince-electors held the right to elect the German kings, making Eltville Castle a place of considerable importance. Over the centuries, the castle has faced its share of adversity. During the Thirty Years' War, in 1635, Swedish troops laid siege to Eltville, leaving the castle in ruins, save for the residential tower. While the East Wing was later rebuilt in the 17th century, much of the castle remains a ruin, adding to its romantic allure. Today, Eltville Castle is a multifaceted attraction that appeals to a wide range of visitors. History enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to delve into the castle's past, exploring the tower's various levels and learning about its former inhabitants. The Gutenberg memorial within the tower pays tribute to Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type, who received an honor in Eltville in 1465. Visitors can climb the 123 steps to the top of the tower, where a panorama platform offers breathtaking views of the Rhine River, the town of Eltville, and the surrounding vineyards. The castle grounds also boast a beautiful rose garden, where over 350 varieties of roses bloom from June through September. The rose garden provides a tranquil oasis for visitors to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The castle courtyard hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and theatrical performances. The castle's strategic location on the Rhine River has always been a key factor in its importance. The river provided a vital transportation route for trade and commerce, and the castle served as a defensive stronghold, protecting the town from invaders. Even today, the Rhine River adds to the castle's charm, with boats gliding along the water and vineyards cascading down the hillsides. Visitors can also explore the town of Eltville, which is known for its well-preserved timber-framed houses, charming cobblestone streets, and numerous wine cellars. Eltville is often called the "City of Wine, Sparkling Wine, and Roses," and it offers a genuine glimpse into life in the Rhine Valley. The town's tourist information center is located in the castle tower, providing visitors with helpful information and brochures. The Electoral Castle is Eltville's historic landmark. The castle with its irregular four-sided ground plan formed the south-east cornerstone of the town's fortifications and was built on the ruins of a previous castle that was destroyed in the Customs War of 1301. In 1332 Balduin of Trier, Archbishop of Mainz, Electoral Prince and Chancellor of the German Empire, obtained special privileges similar to those granted to the city of Frankfurt from his patron, Emperor Louis the Bavarian. These entailed the right to build fortification walls and moats. Those who in earlier times wanted to visit the Electoral Castle entered initially through the upper courtyard. One was able to enter only through the then-existing gates. Across from the fortress tower one finds the large pointed-arch northern gate. Today a stone bridge leading to the Burgstrasse and to the town center spans the wide moat. Earlier the stone bridge did not stretch all the way to the fortress gate. Entrance for wagons was possible only via a large drawbridge and pedestrians crossed via a smaller one. The residential tower, that was completed around 1350, was adjudged by the Hesse State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments as having a particular historical significance: The type of fortified residential tower, originating from France, is an example for this specific architecture along the Middle Rhine. In the basement the walls reach a strength of 2,45 meter and in the 1st floor of 2,06 meter. With its height of 24 meter, the tower can be seen from far away. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, nature, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of a charming German town, Eltville Castle offers a memorable experience. Its blend of historical significance, scenic beauty, and cultural attractions makes it a destination that should not be missed.
