Discover more about Geo Center at the KTBas

The Geo Center at the KTB (Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), located in Windischeschenbach, Bavaria, offers a captivating journey into the depths of our planet. Built on the site of the German Continental Deep Drilling Program, this science museum provides a unique opportunity to explore the Earth's crust and understand the geoscientific phenomena that shape our world. The KTB project, conducted between 1987 and 1995, involved drilling two boreholes into the Earth's crust. The main borehole reached an astounding depth of 9,101 meters (29,859 feet), making it the deepest borehole in Germany and one of the deepest in the world drilled into hard, crystalline rock. The project aimed to directly study the Earth's crust with unprecedented accuracy, leading to significant new insights into its structure and processes. The Geo Center was established to share the findings of the KTB project with the public and promote geoscientific knowledge. The center's exhibits showcase the history, technology, and results of the drilling program, as well as broader topics in geosciences. Visitors can explore interactive displays, examine drill cores and cuttings from the deep borehole, and learn about the composition and dynamics of the Earth's interior. One of the highlights of the Geo Center is the towering 83-meter (272-foot) drilling rig, which remains standing as a monument to the KTB project. Visitors can climb the rig for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and gain a sense of the scale and complexity of the drilling operation. The center also features a rock trail where visitors can easily access rocks from the borehole. The Geo Center's exhibits cover a wide range of geoscientific topics, including: * **The Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB):** Learn about the history, goals, and challenges of the KTB project, as well as the innovative drilling and monitoring technologies developed for the program. * **The Earth's Crust:** Explore the structure, composition, and properties of the Earth's continental crust, including the different types of rocks and minerals found at various depths. * **Plate Tectonics:** Discover the theory of plate tectonics and how the movement of the Earth's plates shapes the continents, creates mountains, and causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. * **Volcanism and Earthquakes:** Experience the power of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes through interactive exhibits, including an earthquake simulator and a semi-electronic seismograph. * **Minerals of the Upper Palatinate:** Learn about the unique minerals found in the Upper Palatinate region, including the historically significant fluorite minerals. * **Climate Change:** Investigate geoscientific research into climate change, including the study of stone climate archives. * **Energy Production:** Explore both fossil fuels and the utilization of geothermal energy. * **Mineral Resources:** Discover the utilization and sustainability of geogenic raw materials, such as sand, graphite, and rare earths. The Geo Center offers a variety of educational programs and guided tours for school groups, families, and adult groups. These programs provide hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to delve deeper into specific geoscientific topics. The GEO-Labor school laboratory offers special programs, and the center also has a GEO-Kino that shows geoscientific films. The Geo Center is not only an educational resource but also a meeting place for scientists, researchers, and anyone interested in the Earth sciences. The center hosts conferences, workshops, and other events that bring together experts from around the world to share their knowledge and findings. The Geo Center KTB is located in a geologically unique area, highlighting the geological significance of the entire region. Nearby attractions include the Parkstein Volcano Experience, the Upper Palatinate open-air museum, and the romantic valley of the Waldnaab. The Geo Center also participates in the GEOPARK Bavaria-Bohemia, an international geopark that offers a journey back to the time when dinosaurs lived and volcanoes shaped the landscape. Whether you are a seasoned geologist or simply curious about the world around you, the Geo Center at the KTB offers an unforgettable experience that will deepen your understanding of our planet and its dynamic processes. It is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of scientific exploration, and a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet for future generations. The Geo Center is accessible to disabled persons, offers sitting accommodations, and welcomes service dogs.
