Getting There

Walking

The Hans-Watzlik-Hain is accessible from the Zwieslerwaldhaus area. From the parking area at Zwieslerwaldhaus, follow signs towards the 'Luchsfährte' (Lynx Trail). The access road to the Hain is about a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, from the Schwellhäusl, a short walk towards Zwieslerwaldhaus will lead you to the Hain.
Public Transport

Take the Igelbus to the Brechhäuslau (Zwieslerwaldhaus) stop during summer or the Altes Zollhaus (Zwieslerwaldhaus) stop during winter. From either stop, follow the walking directions. A guest card (GUTi) provides free access to public transport in the Bavarian Forest. Check local bus schedules for up-to-date information.

Hans-Watzlik-Hain is an untouched, primeval forest within the Bavarian Forest National Park. This protected area allows visitors to experience the wilderness as it has existed for centuries. Named in honor of Hans Watzlik, a poet from Bohemia (1879-1948), the Hain showcases the beauty and power of nature's resilience.The forest is home to ancient tree giants – primarily firs, beeches and maples – many reaching heights of over 50 meters. Among them stands the 'Große Waldhaustanne' (Great Forest House Fir), the oldest and largest tree in the National Park. This ancient fir has a circumference of over 6.5 meters and has been declared a national heritage tree. Studies have found that over 274 species live within the tree.Visitors can explore the Hans-Watzlik-Hain via marked hiking trails, including a detour off the 'Grünes Dreieck' (Green Triangle) route. The trails wind through the forest, allowing hikers to marvel at the standing and fallen giants, offering a tangible connection to the natural world. The area was placed under protection in 1950. A visit can be combined with a trip to the Schwellhäusl, a historic timber rafting station with a beer garden.
