Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Riesloch waterfall parking lot (Rißlochweg 64, 94249 Bodenmais), follow the signs towards the Riesloch Waterfalls. The well-marked trail, approximately 1.5 km long, will take you through the forest to a wooden bridge offering a great view of the falls. Be prepared for a 30-45 minute walk. Parking at the lot costs 8 Euro, and only accepts EC and Credit Card.

  • Public Transport

    Take a train to Bodenmais station. From there, use the local bus towards Arberhochstraße. Get off at the stop closest to the trailhead for Riesloch-Wasserfälle. Check the local bus schedule in advance. From the bus stop, it's about a 20-minute walk to the falls. With the Bodenmais guest card, you can travel free on buses and the forest train throughout the Bayerwald-Ticket area. Otherwise, a single bus fare will typically cost around €2-€3.

The Riesloch Waterfalls (Rieslochfälle) are a captivating natural attraction located near Bodenmais in the Bavarian Forest. These impressive waterfalls are considered the highest in the Bavarian Forest, plunging a total of 55 meters in five main stages. The main waterfall has a height of 15 meters. The falls are formed by the Riesbach stream, which is created by the confluence of the Arberbach, Schwellbach, Kleinhüttenbach and Wildauerbach.The Riesloch gorge (Rieslochschlucht), through which the water flows, is a designated nature reserve, boasting a stunning, primeval forest with old mixed mountain woods and spruce forests. The area is home to various Ice Age relics in its flora and fauna. The name 'Riesloch' refers to a geological fault (Riss) along which the stream has eroded over thousands of years. The area has been a nature reserve since 1939, making it one of Bavaria's oldest.The waterfalls are particularly impressive after heavy rainfall or snowmelt, when the water volume is at its peak. The hike to the falls leads through a stepped mountain forest with a high proportion of old and dead wood, providing a habitat for various animal and plant species. The path can be steep and rocky, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
