    Discover more about Schoenburg Castle

Schoenburg Castle, or Burg Schoenburg as it's known in German, stands majestically overlooking the town of Oberwesel, a picturesque gem nestled in the heart of the Rhine Valley. This imposing structure is more than just a pretty picture; it's a living testament to centuries of history, power, and resilience. From its strategic position high above the Rhine, Schoenburg Castle offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the grandeur of the Middle Ages, combined with modern comforts and hospitality. First mentioned in historical records between 911 and 1166, Schoenburg Castle's story is intertwined with the fortunes of the Lords of Schoenburg, who ruled over Oberwesel and controlled the lucrative customs duties on Rhine traffic. The castle's unique inheritance system, where all sons inherited equally, led to a complex web of families residing within its walls – as many as 24 families in the 14th century, creating a vibrant and bustling community within the fortress. The castle's history is marked by periods of prosperity and devastating destruction. One of the most notable figures associated with Schoenburg was Friedrich von Schoenburg, a renowned military leader known as "Marshall Schomberg," who served various European powers in the 17th century. However, the castle met a tragic fate in 1689 during the War of the Grand Alliance when French troops set fire to Oberwesel and the castle, leaving it in ruins for over two centuries. Victor Hugo, the famous French author, described the ruins as one of the most admirable scree works in Europe. In the late 19th century, the castle was acquired by the German-American Rhinelander family, who undertook a partial restoration, breathing new life into the ancient structure. The town council of Oberwesel eventually bought the castle back in 1950, and since 1957, the Hüttl family has leased the property, transforming it into a renowned hotel and restaurant. Today, Schoenburg Castle offers a multifaceted experience for visitors. The Burghotel Auf Schoenburg provides luxurious accommodations with a range of rooms, from cozy singles to spacious suites, many offering stunning views of the Rhine. Hotel guests can explore the beautiful castle gardens, a hidden paradise spanning over two hectares, featuring winding paths, fountains, and quiet seating areas. The castle garden, accessible exclusively to hotel guests, offers a tranquil escape with stunning views, a small outdoor library, and even a goblin cave. The Tower Museum within the castle provides a fascinating glimpse into the castle's history, with interactive exhibits and a stone-throwing simulation that demonstrates medieval siege warfare. Ascending the 122 steps to the top of the tower rewards visitors with unparalleled panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. The museum is open seasonally, and admission is free for hotel guests. Non-hotel guests can enjoy the Castle Bistro, which serves lunch, afternoon tea, and local wines, all while soaking in the breathtaking views of the Rhine River and Oberwesel. The restaurant, however, is reserved for hotel guests, offering a fine dining experience in a medieval ambiance. Schoenburg Castle is not just a hotel or a museum; it's an immersive experience that combines history, luxury, and natural beauty. Whether you're exploring the battlements, wandering through the gardens, or savoring a glass of Riesling while overlooking the Rhine, Schoenburg Castle offers an unforgettable journey through time and a true taste of Rhine Valley magic. The castle's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area, including the Loreley rock, numerous vineyards, and other historic towns and castles along the Rhine.
