    Discover more about Porta-Kanzel

The Porta Kanzel, a natural observation platform, offers one of the most iconic views in the Porta Westfalica region. Situated on the western slopes of the Jakobsberg mountain, this sandstone cliff provides a stunning panorama of the Weser River as it carves its way through the landscape, creating the dramatic 'Westphalian Gate'. Across the valley, the imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument stands proudly on the Wittekindsberg, completing the picture-postcard scene. Historically, the Porta Kanzel has been a point of interest for centuries. In the Middle Ages, a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony stood in this area, marking it as a place of significance. However, the site's development as a tourist attraction began in 1887 when members of the Hausberge Tourism Club made the crag accessible, recognizing its potential as a viewpoint. The name 'Porta Kanzel,' meaning 'Pulpit of Porta,' evokes the feeling of standing on a precipice, delivering a sermon to the landscape below. The Jakobsberg itself is the westernmost peak of the Wesergebirge range, rising to 235 meters above sea level. This strategic location made it a key site during the Second World War. Tunnels were excavated beneath the Porta Kanzel as part of a secret underground production facility known as Dachs I, intended to protect vital war industries from Allied bombing. After the war, the entrances to these tunnels were partially destroyed, altering the western face of the Kanzel. Today, the Porta Kanzel is primarily a place of peace and natural beauty. The views are particularly spectacular at sunset, when the Weser River reflects the golden light and the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument is silhouetted against the sky. The hike to the viewpoint is a pleasant experience in itself, winding through the forests of the Jakobsberg. While en route to the Porta Kanzel, visitors may also encounter the Schlageter Monument, another viewing platform, though its views are now somewhat obscured by trees. The area surrounding the Porta Kanzel offers numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. Hiking trails crisscross the Jakobsberg, providing options for both short strolls and longer treks. The Weserbergland Trail, a long-distance hiking route, passes nearby, offering a chance to explore the wider region. The Weser Cycle Path also follows the river, providing a scenic route for cyclists. For those interested in history, the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument is a must-see. The monument houses a visitor center with exhibits about the monument's history and the surrounding area. The nearby town of Minden also offers a range of historical and cultural attractions, including the Minden Museum and the Minden Cathedral. The Porta Kanzel is more than just a viewpoint; it's a place where history, nature, and stunning scenery converge. Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a history buff, or simply someone seeking a moment of tranquility, the Porta Kanzel offers a rewarding experience.
