Discover more about Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps, a historic path etched into the Rock of Gibraltar, offer a unique blend of physical challenge and stunning natural beauty. Originally constructed by the British military in the 18th century, these steps served as a vital communication route to various defense posts along the southern end of the Rock. Today, they provide adventurous hikers with an unforgettable journey to the summit, revealing panoramic views at every turn. The trail begins at Jews' Gate, located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. From there, the path zigzags upwards, traversing primarily along the Rock's eastern side. As you ascend, you'll encounter diverse landscapes, from dense vegetation to dramatic limestone cliffs. Keep an eye out for the local flora and fauna, including unique plant species and migratory birds. The route also passes by historical landmarks such as Goat's Hair Caves and a derelict pre-war tunnel and pumping station, offering glimpses into Gibraltar's past. The final stretch involves a strenuous climb to the summit, where you'll find Lord Airey's Battery and O'Hara's Battery, equipped with 9.2-inch guns dating back to World War II. From this vantage point, you can soak in breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, the Spanish Costa del Sol, and the Rif Mountains of Morocco.
