Getting There

  • Walking

    From Gibraltar Harbour, walk east towards Main Street. Continue straight on Main Street until you reach the intersection with Corral Road. Turn right onto Corral Road, and North Bastion will be on your left at 1 Corral Rd. The walk should take about 15-20 minutes.

  • Public Transport

    From the Gibraltar Harbour area, take a local bus heading towards the city center or Main Street. Alight at the Main Street stop. Walk straight until you reach the intersection with Corral Road. Turn right onto Corral Road, and you will find North Bastion at 1 Corral Rd. Bus fare is approximately £1.60.

  • Car

    From the Gibraltar Harbour area, head east along the main road, following signs for the city center. At the roundabout near Main Street's entrance, take the second exit onto Main Street. Continue to Corral Road and turn right. North Bastion will be on your left. Parking is available on Corral Road, but it can be limited.

The North Bastion, originally named Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), stands as a testament to Gibraltar's strategic military importance. Located at the northern end of the peninsula, it was a crucial defense against attacks from mainland Spain. The bastion's story began with the Giralda tower, constructed in 1309 after the Spanish took Gibraltar from the Moors.In the mid-16th century, King Philip II commissioned improvements to Gibraltar's defenses, including converting the Giralda Tower into a bastion. After the British captured Gibraltar in 1704, they further strengthened the fortifications, recognizing the bastion's pivotal role. The North Bastion was vital during the Siege of Gibraltar in 1727, withstanding intense attacks.Today, the North Bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land. Visitors can explore the well-preserved structure, wander through the Giralda Gardens, and enjoy panoramic views of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. The site is also home to the Gibraltar Petanca Association.
