The Royal Engineers' Monument stands as a tribute to the Corps of Royal Engineers, honoring their enduring service and significant contributions to Gibraltar. Presented to the people of Gibraltar by the Corps, the monument commemorates their continuous service since 1704 and the formation of the first body of soldiers of the Corps, known as the Company of Royal Artificers, in 1772. The monument was erected on March 26, 1994. The Royal Engineers played a crucial role in shaping Gibraltar's infrastructure and defense systems. In 1772, a unit of 68 military engineers was formed to enhance Gibraltar's fortifications. Known as the Company of Soldier Artificers, their accomplishments included constructing the King's Bastion. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), they tunneled through the Rock of Gibraltar, enabling cannons to effectively target advancing Spanish troops. In 1787, they received the Royal designation and became the Corps of Royal Engineers. The bronze statue on Main Street serves as a reminder of the strategic importance of Gibraltar and its unique blend of cultures.
