Discover more about Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay, located on the eastern side of Gibraltar, offers a serene escape from the bustling city. This man-made beach was revitalized in 2014 with approximately 50,000 tons of sand imported from the Western Sahara, restoring it to its former glory after severe storms had eroded much of the original beach. Two curved groynes and a submerged breakwater were constructed to protect the coastline from wave action and retain the shifting sands. The beach provides a sheltered environment ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The surrounding cliffs offer a dramatic backdrop and a sense of seclusion, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists seeking tranquility. The clear turquoise waters are inviting for a leisurely dip, and a rocky reef nearby teems with marine life, making it an excellent location for underwater exploration. Historically, the area above Sandy Bay was home to Gibraltar's large water catchments, which are no longer in use. These catchments, built between 1903 and 1961, utilized the smooth surface of the Great Gibraltar Sand Dune to collect rainwater, which was then channeled into reservoirs inside the Rock. Today, the slope has been restored to its natural state, covered in vegetation native to Gibraltar. Visitors can enjoy the beach's soft sands, calm waters, and the convenience of nearby amenities. While parking can be challenging, the beauty and peacefulness of Sandy Bay make it worth the effort.
