These tunnels, also known as the Upper Galleries, were painstakingly carved out of solid limestone by British forces during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783). This extensive network of tunnels was created to provide strategic gun positions to defend against Spanish and French forces attempting to recapture Gibraltar.Sergeant-Major Henry Ince of the Military Artificers conceived the idea of tunneling through the Rock to reach a blind spot on the north-east side. Work began in 1782, with miners using sledgehammers, crowbars, and gunpowder to excavate the tunnels. St. George's Hall emerged as one of the key chambers within this tunnel system. Legend says that Lord Napier of Magdala, Governor of Gibraltar, hosted a banquet in St. George's Hall for General Ulysses S. Grant, former President of the United States.Today, visitors can explore St. George's Hall and the Great Siege Tunnels as part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
