Despite its name, it primarily holds the remains of those who died from other sea battles and yellow fever epidemics, with only two confirmed interments from the Battle of Trafalgar. The cemetery serves as a poignant reminder of Gibraltar's military past and the sacrifices made during the Napoleonic Wars.

    Discover more about Trafalgar Cemetery

Trafalgar Cemetery, located just south of Gibraltar's city walls, offers a serene and reflective experience steeped in history. Consecrated in 1798, it predates the famed Battle of Trafalgar, and was initially known as Southport Ditch Cemetery. The name changed long after the battle. Despite being named in commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar, it is somewhat misleading as only two casualties from that battle are known to be buried here: Lieutenant William Forster of HMS Colossus and Captain Thomas Norman of the Royal Marine Corps. Most of the other graves belong to victims of other naval battles of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including the First Battle of Algeciras in 1801, and conflicts off Cádiz and Málaga in 1810 and 1812.Beyond the naval conflicts, many interments resulted from the yellow fever epidemics that struck Gibraltar between 1804 and 1814. Walking through the cemetery, visitors encounter a variety of tombstones, some dating back to the 1780s, transferred from Alameda Gardens and St. Jago's Cemetery. The oldest tombstone dates back to 1738. The grounds were restored in the 1980s, and in 1992, a memorial to the Battle of Trafalgar was erected. Today, the cemetery is the site of an annual commemoration on the Sunday closest to Trafalgar Day.The cemetery provides a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Shady trees and well-maintained paths create a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to explore the grounds and reflect on the past. The site is managed by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, with ongoing support from Greenarc for upkeep and flowerbed maintenance.
